The Best Workout for Your Hormones

What is the best workout for your hormones, while also being effective and short? Is that even possible? Yes it is! I discovered an exercise program a couple years ago when I was in the midst of healing my thyroid and improving my overall health. My husband Josh does this workout with me too, as it’s good for both men and women. It’s customizable and adjustable to your ability. Josh and I have always been active, but having kids and working in our businesses makes getting to the gym a little tricky for us. We’re in that season of life where we need to be able to do as much as possible from our home.

The Biggest Mistake with Exercise and the Thyroid

When I was in the midst of initially healing my hypothyroidism, I learned that exercising too much and too hard can actually shut down thyroid function, and create unnecessary stress on your hormones and overall health. It’s important to be careful with what kind and how much exercise you do. If you’re exercising vigorously, but you’re not losing weight, then you may be overworking yourself. That’s obviously not good, as this leads to hormone imbalances. This leads to stubborn weight loss, fatigue, brain fog, aches and pains, and sometimes even weight gain! That’s why I wanted to write about the best workout for your hormones; because your hormones need to be primed to be healthy!

The Best Workout for Your Hormones

The exercise program that’s beneficial to thyroid and overall hormone health is Metabolic Prime by Dr. Jade Teta. The program relies on the power of doing “metabolic micro-bursts.” In addition to burning fat and sculpting muscle, the exercises regenerate 5 molecules in your body called Metabolic Priming Activators, or MPAs. His book here is also an excellent read on the workout, diet, and all things being metabolic.

The 5 MPAs Broken Down

  1. IL-15: This molecule burns fat while enhancing muscle and bone density. The micro-bursts in Jade’s workout program awaken this section of sleeping DNA.
  2. Nitric Oxide: This is the molecule that dilates your blood vessels, and helps send oxygen and nutrients throughout your body.
  3. Lactic Acid: This is called the “youth hormone activator.” It signals the brain to produce more testosterone in men and more human growth hormone (HGH) in women.
  4. IL-6: This is referred to as a fat cell liberator by the creators of Metabolic Prime. When you do the micro-burst training that’s in Metabolic Prime, this molecule burns fat cells for use as fuel.
  5. IL-8: This molecule restores and creates new blood vessels, leading to more lean muscle, more oxygen, and better distribution of nutrients throughout the body.

The Magic of Short Workouts

Dr. Jade Teta explains that longer workouts can be counter-productive because they shut down MPA production. This means that if you’re doing longer and harder workouts, you’re actually accelerating the aging process as you get older. With Metabolic Prime, you workout in 4 rounds of 45 second micro-bursts that feed the production of those 5 molecules mentioned above. This makes for a 15 minute workout (5 minute warm-up beforehand) done 3 times a week. It’s a total workout time of 45 minutes a week!

Does It Really Work?

Yes, it absolutely does. I started doing Metabolic Prime in the late spring of 2016, and I became pregnant with my daughter in the early fall of 2016. Combining this exercise with my eating and overall lifestyle changes has been nothing short of amazing for my hormones and overall health. I started doing Metabolic Prime again one month ago. I feel great, and I notice a difference in my muscle-tone. When I’m picking up my daughter, or carrying heavy items from the car, I notice that my strength has increased.
